Composer

As a composer, I am particularly concerned with recollection, and my pieces often feature recorded sounds from a particular environment, or are inspired by a particular place. I am also interested in folk-song and how this is an important voice from the past, still informing the present. I explore this chiefly through small chamber choir compositions. Additionally I love setting poems to music. I am inspired by poetic images and structurally I love working with poetry.

I am also very concerned with combining prerecorded sound with live instruments. I am currently (2023) working on a piece (‘The Lover’s Ghost’) for small choir, live ‘cello and prerecorded sound. I am also writing ‘postcards’ for piano and piano/sampler with an option to play as soloist and prerecorded material.

Here are two works which began as recorded sounds collectively inspiring music which attempts to convey a sense of place. The first is with film though can be performed independently.

Shades of Blue-Green (2018)

At the Gates of Old Nessebar (2004)

I am currently writing in a  simple tonal world with a focus on combining live instrument(s) and sampled/electronics. I  am also interested in writing music for the piano and ‘cello acoustically, and am concerned with folk-song melody and how it can combine with an extended harmonic world.

My interests are in french impressionism, particularly Claude Debussy and the spectral world of composers such as Karen Tanaka. My electro-acoustic interest is the writing of pieces for live or recorded ‘cello or piano and pre-recorded material. My background includes jazz (particularly Swing jazz) and this influences my work harmonically and rhythmically.
