Pianist
I have played the piano for over 50 years and am widely experienced as a performer of new music with the Electro-Acoustic ensemble and formerly as a jazz pianist with the popular Hull swing jazz group ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’
I have accompanied students for performance exams at York college for many years. Also to prepare music theatre students for HE/Drama college auditions.
I am now an accompanist for a local community choir. (Bishopthorpe, and for our chamber choir ‘Coracle’.
As a pianist I am particularly interested in short-form compositions, particularly pieces in the early 20th Century. However I have also performed more contemporary works.
My performances have included ‘Children’s Songs’ by Chick Corea, ‘Water Dances’ by Karen Tanaka, ‘Raintree Sketch II’ by Toru Takemitsu and works by Debussy and Graham Fitkin. I enjoy playing a wide repertoire and value its importance to develop my writing for the piano.
More recent performance have included pieces by Charles Ives, Charles Camilleri, John Cage and Federico Mompou.
I am also very interested in performing my own works such as ‘The Pilgrimage of Grace’ and very much want to programme this work alongside other repertoire.
‘Cellist
I am a member of the Hessle sinfonia.
I am developing an interest in performing my own works on the instrument and other selected works. In 2024 I performed ‘cello in a piece for choir, ‘cello and prerecorded sounds (‘The Lover’s Ghost’)
In the 2018 Electro-Acoustic ensemble concert I played my own ‘Shades of Blue-Green’ and ‘Song of songs’ by Karen Tanaka.
I gave further performances of the work in 2022 with the Electro-Acoustic ensemble.
In 2023 I performed in ‘Duet; by the composer John Stead.
I have an interest in exploring and making arrangements for ‘cello and piano.
